Petrol Flags

The Times from 2004 stated that “The price of patriotism for Euro 2004 was put at £16,740,000 or 4.5 million gallons of fuel yesterday. A study has found that driving a vehicle at 60mph, with a flag fluttering, costs the average engine 2 percent in efficiency. The estimated three million vehicles with flags each lost 1.5 gallons of fuel”.

Now with the petrol price at least 25% higher than it was in 2004, and World Cup mania, my guess is that the figure will top £20 million.
